Before I do that, I’d like to follow on quickly from my last Substack…
I mentioned my marvellous music teacher David Penrose…Well I had a lovely catch up with him last week. So pleased to see him so well and full of beans. I, as do many others, owe him a great deal in sharing his passion for music with us and for his gentle guidance and encouragement. Thank you so much David and thank you to Martin Ring for organising it…Let’s do it again soon!
Henry Moore Foundation recordings - Film coming soon.
Back to this Substack…I thought it might be a good idea to clear up why there are different versions of me on social media and the internet generally. Because I do various differing things in music, I have compartmentalised them…Mainly so people can find what they want to listen to quickly, but also as a way to keep me focused!
Most confusion is between Garry DW Judd and Garry Judd…
Garry DW Judd is the name under which you’ll find my ‘classical’ music. This is my authentic voice. This doesn’t mean that I value or invest any less of myself in anything else I do. Rather that if you listen to music by Garry DW Judd, you’re hearing my story and listening to me thinking, unrestricted by any other means. All of this music is for acoustic instruments, solo up to symphony orchestra and is conventionally notated and intended to be closely interpreted (apart from the 100 Electric Nocturnes and a very early piece called ‘The Flea 1 & 2’, which experiment with improvisation and alternative notations).
Garry Judd is the name I write music for film, TV and other media under. The nature of this means that I’m trying to help someone else tell their story, so have to take a step back ego-wise. I love technology, so I use all instruments (including electronic ones) that I can get my hands on to make this music. I’ve had the chance to hone my music to picture chops over the years and that takes a part too. There are separate accounts on SM for these, although on Facebook, there is also a plain Garry Judd one which is more for friends and family, but it also pulls everything else together too.
The other things I do are restricted genres, so it’s like an Oulipean take on things…
InterContinental and bluMalmö are lofi chill hop aliases and Brainworld is an ambient collaboration I have with legendary guitarist Mark Hewins. I’ve collaborated with others too and released them via my PML, Artful Production Music.
I was introduced to the lofi genre by my old friend Lofi Rod over in Los Angeles. It just clicked with me and I love the contrast between the beats and the harmonic/melodic elements. InterContinental is a musical travelogue and bluMalmö leans more towards jazzhop.
Here’s a link to everything I do - Everything
Because everything I do is now in Dolby Atmos, I’ve been getting asked to do remixes and remasters by some amazing producers…lofi royalty. Here’s a link to a short but growing playlist which you can hear in Spatial Audio on Apple Music…
